Carlos Mare American, b. 1965

Carlos Rodriguez, better known as Mare139, was born in New York in 1965. He is one of the major artists of the "Subway graffiti" movement that flooded the New York City subway system from the late 1960s to the early 1970s. Quickly expanding his repertoire, he ventured into modern sculpture while maintaining a strong heritage of calligraphy rooted in graffiti. His sculptures have had a huge success, as he received orders from the University of Brighton and for the BET Awards trophy. In 2006, he won a Webby Award for his documentary "Style Wars," which follows graffiti artists in New York City during the mid-1980s.
