Eko Nugroho
The Private Museum
Works by Eko Nugroho are presented in the exhibition "Human Being Human: Selections from the Collection of John and Cheryl Chia", held at The Private Museum as part of Singapore Art Week 2026.
As the opening exhibition of the institution’s 2026 programme, this project invites reflection on the human experience. Through a selection of works drawn from the private collection of Dr John Chia and Dr Cheryl Loh, the exhibition explores the search for identity and the transformations that shape both individual and collective trajectories. Structured around four conceptual chapters, Stateless, State, Statehood, and Rebirth, the exhibition examines the stages that contribute to the formation of the human condition.
Built over nearly twenty-five years, the collection now comprises around 500 works, with a strong focus on contemporary practices from Southeast Asia and on narratives where the personal intersects with history. It reflects a sustained commitment to artists whose work gives form to the key issues of their time.
Within this context, the presence of Eko Nugroho resonates with particular clarity. Known for a visual language that is both engaged and deeply narrative, the artist interrogates contemporary social and political dynamics while foregrounding the vulnerability and strength of the human body, a central theme of the exhibition.
