“Believe” presents a scene in which a dark flying saucer hovers above a
blurred treeline. The image subtly recalls the iconic “I Want to Believe”
poster from the television series The X-Files, which became a symbol of
fascination with extraterrestrial life and conspiracy culture. By referencing
this visual motif, Hascoët connects contemporary painting with a piece of
late-20th-century popular imagery. The UFO, suspended in a muted sky,
introduces a sense of ambiguity between belief and skepticism. The title
reinforces this tension, inviting viewers to reflect on imagination, faith, and
the human desire to interpret the unknown. Through its intimate scale and soft,
atmospheric brushwork, the painting transforms a familiar cultural icon into a
quiet, contemplative image where memory, myth, and contemporary visual culture
intersect.
