Rakajoo on ARTE TV

Rakajoo on screen, an immersion into the universe of a multifaceted artist
A new documentary dedicated to Rakajoo opens the doors to his studio and creative process. This rare insight reveals an artist whose practice moves across multiple languages, painting, comics and animation, to tell stories deeply rooted in contemporary realities.
Born in 1986 and based in the Paris region, Rakajoo, whose real name is Baye-Dam Cissé, first distinguished himself in high-level boxing before pursuing a notable artistic career in parallel. Identified early on in 2008, he has since exhibited in Paris, Shanghai and Luxembourg, and was awarded the Prix des Amis du Palais de Tokyo, where he presented his first institutional solo exhibition, Ceinture Nwar, in 2023.
His work stands out for its ability to combine different mediums while exploring notions of territory, identity and memory, often through an Afropean perspective shaped by the duality of African and European roots.
More than a simple portrait, the film reveals a creator who builds a collective narrative from personal experience, connecting sometimes opposing dynamics to question the world we live in.
