Shanghai Art Gallery of the Year
The Magda Danysz Gallery in Shanghai was Awarded the Art Gallery of the Year by Time Out.
This Time Out prize is awarded annually to the best art gallery and judged mainly by its art critics and editors who actively follow the program of each cultural institutions in Shanghai.
The Magda Danysz Gallery was chosen this year for putting up ambitious shows such as the solo show of the internationally acclaimed JR, a giant balloon installation by artist Charles Petillon, and exhibitions by amazing Chinese artists as paper sculptor Li Hongbo lately.
Magda Danysz shared that ?2016 was a challenging year with an always fast growing context in China. But after 8 years in China the gallery artists are still very inspired by the city?s environment. And whether they are Chinese or from abroad they are still very much inspired by what is happening here. Each of our show is an experiment because what we present are special production done specifically for the gallery site. The shows are ambitious, we have to be creative every day to make it happen, but in the end I am very proud of what the artists deliver. I have always wanted to be more than just a dealer and offer a plateform for production to the artists I work with.?
The 2016 season has brought a lot of surprises to the gallery?s audience and Time Out readers. Among the highlights one can remember the 15 000 balloons installation in the shape of a gigantic spiral made by Charles Petillon.
When asked about her hopes for 2017, Magda Danysz shares that she has a lot in store for an amazing new year: ?we will reopen after Chinese New Year with a solo show by Liu Bolin who has a great variety of works I want to show. Usually people know him very well for his Hidden in the City photographs, but he has so much more to show?? The next season will also be the occasion to host the much awaited first show in China by New York based duo FAILE. ?As I have always done in the past, says Magda Danysz, I want a good balance between the Chinese artists and the best of the international talents. All I want to bring to Shanghai is Contemporary Art at its best. And it is even better when the artists do special series that really relate to the City.?
2017 will sure be another ambitious year for the Magda Danysz Gallery. With we are sure a lot of surprises and news.
