Art from the Streets

Art from the Streets is an exceptional and unique exhibition in Southeast Asia, curated by Magda Danysz and presented from January 13 to June 3, 2018, at the ArtScienceMuseum in Singapore - the country''s leading museum of 4,650m2 dedicated to art and to science. Art from the streets gives the keys to understanding Street Art - an art movement born on the streets forty years ago - and illustrates how it has developed in recent years into an undeniable form of art. By tracing the history of the movement, from the 1970s to today, and by discussing the latest developments that it faces today, particularly with the emergence of new mediums, the exhibition is a complete comprehensive panorama of the movement.

Through nearly 200 works, 50 of the best artists in the movement, 20 on site projects, paintings, installations, videos, archives and sketches, Art From the Streets literally takes Street Art inside the ArtScienceMuseum, in the nine museum exhibition galleries. Displaying a complete panorama of Street Art around the world, the exhibition''s itinerary focuses on the precursors of urban art to the masters of the genre, and then explores the artistic common core of graffiti from the 80s before highlighting the abundance that we know since the 2000s: new techniques, new proposals and new formats.

An expression of a social rumor that has become a major element in the history of art, Street Art is one of the most rebellious yet committed artistic forms. In a current context of rampant globalization, where the place of the Internet continues to grow in the daily lives of artists and where new means of communication allow the instantaneous sharing of data, few cultural movements have been able in recent decades to bring together so many people around the world, and to reach such a wide audience.

The exhibition will also showcase the vitality of Southeast Asian artists, the richness of expression and the styles marked by many sources of inspiration, inviting them to create installations and performances on site (indoor and outdoor).

This exhibition about the history of Street Art, to date undeniably the largest in Southeast Asia, is held at the ArtScienceMuseum. Iconic for its lotus architectural form - designed by the architect Moche Safdie - the museum was inaugurated in 2011 and has hosted exhibitions as Van Gogh Alive in 2011, Andy Warhol 15 Minutes Eternal in 2012 or Annie Leibovitz Photographer''s Life in 2016.
