Still Life with Pocari Can – Invader
In Still Life with Pocari Can (2014), Invader reinterprets the classical genre of still life through the lens of pixel art and pop culture. Created as a limited-edition screen print (50 copies), the work measures 30 × 50 cm and features the iconic visual language of the artist: clean pixels arranged on a grid, echoing early video game aesthetics.
This composition playfully juxtaposes a red space invader, a green apple, and a blue Pocari Sweat can—a popular Japanese soft drink. Each element is rendered in the artist’s signature mosaic style, transforming ordinary objects into digital-era icons. The title nods to art history while subverting expectations, merging consumer culture with the formal rigor of traditional still life.
Executed on graph paper, the piece emphasizes structure and control, but the seemingly low-resolution style introduces an element of nostalgia and irony. As in many of Invader’s works, the reference to arcade games and retro computing is not merely decorative—it reflects on the digitization of our lives, the global diffusion of cultural symbols, and the artist’s ongoing mission to “invade” the world with pixels.
Signed, dated, and numbered, this edition is a strong example of Invader’s ability to blur the boundaries between high art and street culture, between analogue tradition and digital language.
