• “If you love life you also love the past, because it is the present as it has survived in memory."

    - Marguerite Yourcenar

A new exhibition by Vhils is always rife with surprises, breakthroughs, experiments with different techniques and materials. Every new series, almost paradoxically, is also a strong reminder of the artist’s earliest creations. With his latest show Latency, Vhils continues carving out his own steady and prolific path. A gripping presentation, deeply influenced by the context of our times.

    An archaeology of the city

Since his debuts in the early 2000s, Vhils has been scratching the surface of a long series of objects and city walls. The originality of his work was evident from the start: instead of adding anything to a medium, the artist would carve into it to reveal its deeper layers, likening the process to an "archaeology of the city". Remnants of time gone by, relics of a collective history, Vhils’ artworks bring to consciousness in a powerful way the many temporalities that surround us and make up our environment.

What I love working with is textured layers that speak of how things change, grow and evolve over time. It is by working through these layers that I seek to bring to the surface something of the essence that has been trapped beneath them.

  • To suspend time

    Vhils - Atomizer series #08, 2021  I  Advertising posters, spray paint, glue, crystal epoxy  I  150 x 120 x 10 cm

    To suspend time

In line with his characteristic archeological approach, Vhils is now exploring a new creative field with the use of resina wherein objects are embedded, like fossils frozen in time. This new form of crystallizing objects, he says, is my way of capturing fragments of everyday life, solidifying them as food for thought and interpretation. In a sense, this work is my attempt to suspend time – to create space for a critical deconstruction of our reality.A deconstruction and a critic of contemporary reality all the more crucial in light of the global issues we are facing today, from global warming to resource scarcity, to the current pandemic ; the latter being referred to by the artist as a “suspended state”This is a moment of tremendous importance, and these objects-turned-fossils are reflections of its meaning. How will future generations understand this experience and how we responded to the challenges of our time?

  • A contemporary humanism

    Vhils - Havoc series #05, 2021  I Hand-carved old metal door  I  172 x 121 x 7 cm

    A contemporary humanism

Sculptor, urban artist, interdisciplinary artist... Among all the qualifiers that fit him, Vhils certainly deserves to be called a portraitist. His work is a vibrant homage to what national constitutions or political slogans emphatically call “the People”, the human factor at the core of any social and historical narrative. By portraying the anonymous, Vhils seeks to put Man back in the center, to reaffirm his importance in the face of economic rationales. A deeply humanistic vision where notions of identity, community and urban development never cease to overlap and to prompt new questions.

  • Portuguese artist Vhils has been inspired for years by the never sleeping city of Shanghai. Video of his previous solo show "Realm" at Danysz gallery Shanghai, in 2019.

“Guided by my ongoing exploration of the meaning of objects and their use, as well as an introspective reflection concerning the effects of recent global events, this new cycle captures different symbolic material elements of contemporary culture, encapsulating them in a latent state and allowing them to be preserved and rediscovered in the future.“

    an ever-evolving vocabulary

Vhils’ fascination for different textures and materials has led him to evolve dramatically over time in his practice, particularly in his studio work destined for interior spaces. In the public space, you have to compete with all the visual clutter that is already there, so you seek to create simpler work that will create a bigger impact on people, whereas in the gallery you have the conditions to present more detailed work which people will have more time to see. For this new exhibition, the artist expanded on some of his most recent series involving acrylic sheets and crystal epoxy. With subtle plays on transparency, depth and refraction, this new show is an invitation to a complex and memorable visual experience, full of grace and thoughtful intricacy.

  • Alexandre Farto, a.k.a. Vhils, was born in 1987 in Portugal. He became active in Lisbon in the early 2000s in the world of graffiti artists. In 2008, he was invited by Banksy to participate in the Cans Festival in London, where his work was immediately hailed as one of the most innovative in recent years on the urban art scene. He now regularly presents exhibitions in major institutions around the world, such as the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the CAFA Art Museum in Beijing, or the Contemporary Art Center of Cincinnati, where his first monographic exhibition in the United States was held in 2020. He lives and works between London and Lisbon.
