"At 4070 meters above sea level, my car unfortunately broke down while I was on my way to the snowy Baima Mountain. So I finished this series while waiting for rescue, hands and feet frozen contemplating the eagles circling in the sky." - Chen Yingjie

AN ODE TO THE NATURAL FORCES

Nature is everywhere in the work of Chen Yingjie and perhaps more than ever in "Sun and Wind." Nourrishing the desire to honor the precious and sacred nature of his homeland, Chen developed the project "Paint from the nature of Yunnan."  Aiming to capture best the essence of Mother Earth through his paintings, the artist surpassed himself, on a physical level, undergoing the arduousness of the weather as well as embracing the difficulties of this picturesque, changing and sometimes ruthless landscape. Under the beating sun and the freezing snow, he braved one of the most beautiful eminence of the world, the sacred Jade Dragon Snow Mountain also know as the "Heavenly Mountain."

Chen Yingjie once said: "We must be in awe of Nature." Through "Sun and Wind," he fulfills his own statement by crystallizing views of varied and breathtaking natural scenery, at different stages of the day, a genuine ode to the natural elements. Wind, sunlight, dust and snow, all the components of the misty mountains he immersed himself in, are transfigured into his unique artistic signature.
  • "Sketching in Yunnan, hiking the Tiger Leaping Gorge, between the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Haba Snow Mountain, painting in the pasture, painting in the wind and painting on the edge of the cliff. A breath of fresh air, stepping on the soft earth, the drifting snow that hits you head-on, and the snow-capped mountains in front of you, move you to tears."

    giving life to magnetic fields

Keeping up with his personnal technic strongly influenced by the Chinese Old Masters, Chen Yingjie brought ink painting along with him on the field. The fluidity of this ancestral material enabled him to represent the fineness of the horizon under the changes of shadows and lights produced by the last rays of the sun at sunset or the profound and progressive lighting of the dawn.

Mastering his gestures, Chen gives life to sharp lines that shapeshift either into lightning, neons or even electric current. From neutral to stronger color range, the vivid hues and the strong sense of motion that transpire from Chen’s oeuvre invite the viewer to contemplation. Taken to another place, the mind is left to wander through the spirit of the mountain telescoped by the magic of paint. From magnetic figures to more abstract lines, the mountains of Yunan have never seemed so alive.

"Every mountain has a different feeling and magnetic field."

An art deeply rooted in tradition

“Chinese traditional culture has a significant impact on my creation.”
    - Chen Yingjie

Taking a contemporary approach to the work of Chinese Old Masters, Chen Yingjie uses a variety of unconventional techniques while keeping with the spirit, the strength and vitality of ink painting and calligraphy. His style shows a great balance between dynamism and contemplation, influenced by age-old concepts that lie at the heart of Chinese art practices and philosophy: the Yin and Yang, as well as the idea of a cosmic flow permeating all things. “You may feel,” he says, “that dynamic and invisible qi flowing around my works.”

    REVISITING THE CHINESE BESTIARY

Deeply impregnated with his motherland traditional culture, Chen summons the legendary bestiary of the chinese iconography such as the dragon and the tiger. In the past, the tiger in Chen's paintings was used to represent anger, but through time, it gradually came to express a catharsis for the complex emotions in our hearts, as well as the chasing of dreams as conveyed by the animal’s strength and beauty. And as for the dragon's representation, under Chen’s imagination they are transfigured in the shape of Möbius circle, symbolizing the infinite cycles of space and time, acting as a metaphor for the influence and change between history and time.
  • A renewed practice of ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM

A renewed practice of ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM

A painter, Chen is also something of a performer. His way of working is greatly gestural. Inspired by traditional ink painting, he physically engages with the canvas, with dynamic moves and splashing techniques. American art critic Harold Rosenberg, who coined the term “action painting”, famously argued that the American abstract painters of his time, the likes of Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning, were using the canvas as “an arena in which to act.” This applies very fittingly to the work of Chen Yingjie.

Following up with the words of Victoria Lu, the first female curator and art ciritic in Chinese contemporary art : "Chen Yingjie has successfully combined the art language of traditional Chinese ink painting with Western street graffiti art to create an expressive language that belongs to 21st century pop art."
  • “Creating is like fighting, you never know your opponent’s next punch, and the most important thing is to observe the current paces and adapt to circumstances.”
