Layers of torn paper, meticulously carved and
peeled away, reveal a complex composition from which human figures emerge. The
work is an exemplary illustration of Vhils's singular approach to portraiture
and urban archaeology, where the act of removal becomes an act of creation.
This interplay between destruction and revelation invites the viewer to
contemplate the passage of time and the accumulated history embedded in the
city's walls. Glimpses of text, commercial imagery and abstract fields of
colour surface from beneath the carved surface, suggesting a narrative of
forgotten stories and discarded information.
