Vhils Portuguese, b. 1987
66 7/8 x 47 1/4 in
A dense, almost archaeological
layering of white paint simultaneously conceals and reveals a complex
portraiture within this captivating composition. The work uses Vhils's
emblematic technique of carving into a surface, here a wooden panel, to exhume
images from beneath accumulated layers of matter. Faces emerge from the
textured surface on the right-hand side, rendered with a raw, almost
stencil-like precision that contrasts with the heavily abraded and fragmented
areas surrounding them. The deliberate removal of matter creates a dynamic
interplay between presence and absence, inviting the viewer to decipher the
fragmented narratives and human forms that seem at once to dissolve and to
coalesce within the white expanse. Visible traces of underlying colours and
textures, glimpsed through the carved channels, add depth and a sense of
history to this otherwise monochromatic presentation.
